History

The Charles Soil Conservation District was organized on March 4, 1941, under provisions of the Maryland Soil Conservation Districts Law as a political subdivision of the State. The District provides local landowners and land users with technical assistance to protect and conserve valuable soil and water resources.

Charles Soil Conservation District

District activities are directed by a five-member board of supervisors and coordinated by the State Soil Conservation Committee and the Maryland Department of Agriculture with technical assistance provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).  Local, State and Federal resources are combined to support District programs which are available to all without discrimination.

Cooperator of the Year

At our annual dinner held on May 14, 2008, the Charles Soil Conservation District recognized William T. DeVane as the Charles SCD 2007 Cooperator of the Year.

Mr. DeVane operates his 74.2 acre family farm on New Cut Road in Marbury, MD.  The primary agricultural operations on the farm include hay and livestock production.

William T. DeVane has been a cooperator with the Charles Soil Conservation District since 2005.  During this time he has successfully installed various soil conservation and water quality practices including heavy use area protection, animal waste storage structure, watering facility, pasture and hayland planting and the implementation of a comprehensive nutrient management plan.

During the dinner program, numerous other groups also recognized Mr. DeVane and presented him with Proclamations and Certificates of Appreciation.  Included in this group are: the Charles County Commissioners, the Maryland House of Delegates, and the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

Congratulations are again extended to William T. DeVane for his exemplary conservation ethic as demonstrated by his application of best management practices on his land.

Conservation Award

Also recognized during the dinner was Hugh C. Gardiner, Inc. The organization received the 2007 Conservation Award.

Hugh C. Gardiner, Inc. was recognized for its participation with the District in its no-till drill rental program.  The Gardiners have been instrumental in launching the program and have supported the conservation district and the agricultural community throughout the years.

Congratulations are again extended to Hugh C. Gardiner, Inc. for outstanding support of the agricultural community.

Southern Maryland RC&D Board Member of the Year

On April 17, 2008, Southern Maryland RC &D held its annual dinner at which they recognized Luis Dieguez as Board Member of the Year.  Luis first became a Board Member in 2004.  Since then he has shown tremendous leadership on a great many projects, including efforts by the RC&D and Charles Soil Conservation District to stabilize severely eroding shoreline along NSF Indian Head’s Potomac shore.  Dieguez’ hard work in Southern Maryland is much appreciated.

Present to commemorate Dieguez’ work with RC&D was Board of County Commissioners President Jack Russell and Commissioners Tom Mattingly and Dan Raley.  Also present were Dick Meyers, Special Assistant to Senator Barbara Mikulski; Hammid Matin, from Senator Cardin’s office; and Susan Lawrence, Assistant to State Senator Middleton.  Other guests included NRCS Assistant State Conservationist Mark Rose and RC&D Coordinator Jeremy West.
